müller co-ax ag valves for Hydrogen

co-ax Valves Designed for Hydrogen Applications

coax valves for demanding hydrogen applications

For reliable performance, flexibility and endurance, manufacturers of hydrogen equipment require valves which can deliver an extended cycle life with minimal space requirements and bubble tight shut-off capability.

To meet these stringent requirements, leading manufacturers rely on co-ax® valves, which are not like any other valves you’ve encountered in your career.

The reason why co-ax® valves perform so flawlessly under extreme conditions is that the valves' operation is pressure-independent. In a co-ax® valve, the control element is always pressured balanced, regardless of whether it’s open or closed.

This unique design allows a co-ax® valve to cycle more quickly with positive, leak-free shutoff. As a result, co-ax® valves can last up to ten times longer than conventional ball or diaphragm valves, while requiring virtually no maintenance throughout their extended life cycles.

Why choose co-ax® valves?

In a co-ax® valve, media flows straight through the valve without any significant deviation of the media. Due to the pressure balanced design, the necessity of an internal pilot orifice is eliminated. This makes the valve less susceptible to contamination and solid particles and provides higher flow rates with a minimized pressure loss.

The combination of compact size, bubble tight design and long cycle life makes co-ax® valves the ideal replacement for actuated ball valves, angle-seat valves, motor driven valves and conventional solenoid valves especially in remote or difficult to service applications.

co-ax® valves have only one moving part which greatly reduces actuation forces and operational stresses. As a result, co-ax® valves can last up to ten times longer than conventional valves, requiring virtually no maintenance throughout their extended cycle life.

Aircraft Fire Trainer with co-ax valves

Flow Factor and  co-ax® valves application

Get a quote for co-ax®
 HERE!

Aircraft Fire Trainer

Aircraft Fire Trainer are designed to recreate a series of different emergency scenarios, including interior and exterior incident fires and large-scale fuel spill fires on airplanes, all managed by an adjacent control tower and PC control station. Inside, a series of fires can be accessed by a series of doors on multiple levels, helping to develop realistic rescue scenarios.
Aircraft Fire Trainers are fully programmable, and automatically respond to the application of extinguishing media, for a realistic fire response.
Fire simulations utilize clean burning propane. Alternately, "dual-fueled" fire simulations are available that burn either kerosene for maximum realism or propane for environmental compliance.

Summary
co-ax® valves are used to release propane or liquid fuel to the plane mock-up shown in the picture. The fuel is ignited and the fire is extinguished by fire fighting trainees. They use water to extinguish the flames. Water also keeps the mock-up from distorting. The co-ax® valves are submerged under the gravel and water in the bottom of the pool.

Why are co-ax® valves the preferred choice?

  • Positive shut-off.
  • Fast open/closing speed  < 100 milliseconds required.
  • Compact size.
  • Valves (externally controlled) can be buried in a pit.

Typical co-ax® valves being used in this application

  • VMK 20 NC
  • VFK 25 NC
  • MK 10 NC 1E

co-ax® valves for polyol applications

co-ax® valves being used in this application

  • PCS-1 10, PCS-1 15, PCS-2 10, PCS-2 15, PCS-3 15, PCB-1 10, PCD-1 10 - cartridge valves, externally controlled KB 15 direct acting valves
  • VMK-H 15, VMK-H 15 DR, VMK-H 20, VMK-H 25, VSV-M 50

co-ax® valves are used to inject polyol, which then blends together with isocyanates to create a chemical compound called polyurethanes.
The mixture of the chemicals form molds for many different applications, which are used to create mattresses, foam insulation for refrigerators and freezers, home and automotive seats, elastomeric shoe soles, fibers (e.g. Spandex), and adhesives.
Isocyanates, when exposed to air, tend to form crystals that generate premature wear in valves, especially those containing abrasive fillers and they are equally destructive to the seals and seat.
Multiple co-ax® valves have been designed and sold for polyol applications. The fast actuation speeds of the co-ax® valve combined with high cycle life and virtually no maintenance are key advantages for this application.

Why are co-ax® valves the preferred choice?

  • Fast actuation
  • Engineered for long life (high cycle life)
  • Pressure balanced design

Solenoid Valve Trouble Shooting Guide

Marvin the Maintenance Man wants to help you troubled shoot Solenoid Valves.

BUY valves HERE!  Contact Flow Factor HERE!

Whoops: "Throw the extra parts away."  All parts must be assembled correctly for the valve to operate properly.

Whoops: "I only hit the valve ONCE with my hammer." A hammer is not a trouble shooting tool. Valve abuse contributes to the most reported problems.

Whoops:  "We don't need a special wrench; I'll find something to take the valve apart". Special tools for the valve disassembly may be needed.  Pipe wrenches etc. will damage parts.

Whoops: "I'll add more teflon tape."  Gobs of tape will block internal passages and interfere with seating. (These are not ball valves).

Whoops:  I forgot to turn on the electricity." "I forgot to open the hand valve." "A strainer takes up too much room." Beware of Marvin Maintenance.

Whoops:  "It's only 10 PSI more than maximum operating pressure."  "It's almost at the minimum operating pressure." " Voltage is not that important." Name Plate Data Applies.

Whoops: "I throw them away." Installation and maintenance instruction sheets have trouble shooting hints, maintenance notes and assembly instructions; etc." Do Not Throw Them Away.

Whoops: "So I piped it up backwards and/or upside down." Proper Mounting is IMPORTANT.

Whoops: "We're out of 1 inch pipe, so I used 1/4 inch pipe." Valves, especially 3-way and 4-way valves,  should not be restricted.

Whoops: "Well it operated pretty well for the past 20 years."  A maintenance program is suggested.

Whoops: "The Valve is defective."  "The Valve does not operate." "The Valve Failed."  Not very descriptive. Find out part number and get application data.

Whoops:  "I need the silver thing." = Solenoid Sub Base Assembly.
"I need an orifice." = Not a spare part. Buy a new valve.
"I need  gasket." =  Specify which one.
"I need  plunger." = Core Assembly.
                "I need a solenoid." = Coil

Whoops:  "What is a Kit?" Do not replace individual parts.  Use a kit to replace all the wearable parts and restore the valve.  Call for kit # or look on name plate.

Whoops: "Buy any two way valve, they're are all the same." Misapplication problems can be avoided.

Whoops: "I can trouble shoot anything!"  We believe you Marvin.

Installation Tips for 3 and 4 way Pilot Operated Valves

1. Do Not Select Oversized Valves. Size Carefully for Flow and Cylinder speed. For Economy and reliable operation.

2. Use Full Area Lines in Pressure and Exhaust.

3. I.D. (Internal Diameter) of lines and fittings must be larger than orifice.

4. Differential Between Pressure and Exhaust must exceed the minimum at all times.

5. Do Not Meter Flow in Pressure or Exhaust Lines.

6. Install Speed Control Valves in the Cylinder Lines Only.

7. Avoid Pressure Regulators if Possible. If essential, the regulator must have flow capacity to maintain the MINIMUM Differential at all times.

8. Hydraulic Pumps or Air Reservoirs must have adequate capacity to maintain the minimum DeltaP at all times.

9. Pressure Differential may be measured by means of gages installed immediately at the pressure and exhaust connections.

10. Do Not Mistake a Faulty Cylinder for a valve malfunction, Isolate the Cylinder.

Parker Solenoid Valves and Types of Fluids

Parker Solenoid Valves from Flow Factor

How Fluid Type Affects Solenoid Valve Choices

In industrial applications, the successful transfer of fluids requires different types of valves to open and close the flow. Solenoid valves are a popular choice because they offer rapid automatic opening and closing, remote control and high process security.

Fluid considerations

The type of fluid being used in a production process may potentially reduce the operational lifetime of a solenoid valve. Why so? Well, many parts of the valve, such as the body, mechanism and seals, will be in direct contact with the fluid. In diverse industrial applications, the fluids may include aggressive media like cleaning agents and reagents used in food processing, car washing and industrial washing applications. These fluids require the careful selection of a solenoid valve to do the job safely, reliably and effectively.
The materials used in the valve should not influence the chemical composition of the fluid, i.e. breakdown and contaminate, especially in the food and beverage industry. Here, for processes such as the cleaning of bottles or machinery, a solenoid valve using lead-based materials could not be specified for obvious reasons. Instead, stainless steel is more appropriate, which is the case in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors too.

Impact on choice

It is important to avoid comparing solenoid valves, feature by feature, when looking to specify the right product for an installation. However, on many occasions the specific application must guide the common sense choice. For instance, where maximum working life is required, such as in outdoor service scenarios, then corrosion resistance must be a priority. Similarly, one must also factor in the presence of an explosion-risk environment, such as those found in the oil and gas and petrochemical sectors.
An example of a solenoid valve developed for use in challenging applications where aggressive chemicals or fluids are present is the Parker 221G series stainless steel solenoid valve. The use of high-grade 316L stainless steel as the valve body material is significant as in harsh environments it gives increased system reliability and, in turn, improved operational performance and productivity. In fact, it has shown to deliver 30% more life on average (depending on the application) versus some other technologies.
Offering wide-ranging chemical compatibility is vital, and the 221G series valve has been designed to be 30% more resistant in corrosive environments. The use of fluoroelastomer (FKM) seals aids dependable operation under severe chemical conditions and at higher temperatures where many other seal materials may perish or otherwise lose their integrity. Degrading seals can lead to fluid leaks and the associated safety risks and costly downtime. FKM seals are especially well suited to arduous conditions with petroleum fuels, mineral-based hydraulic fluids or other solvents present.
