Barksdale Series 450E

Barksdale Intelligent Transmitters (BiT), Series 450E and H450E are BiT's Intrinsically Safe models. Barksdale has been manufacturing explosion proof transmitters for many years allowing their use in Class I Div 1 or Zone 0, 1 hazardous location. So why introduce an Intrinsically Safe (I.S.) model?  Explosion proof wiring requires metal conduit and special explosion proof sealing glands and junction boxes which are not practical for equipment that needs to be quickly rigged or broken down to modular sections to transport on roads to the next location such as Drilling, Frac or other mobile equipment. I.S. protection concept allows use in the same hazardous areas as explosion proof only with the same flexible cables and electrical connections used in ordinary locations including industrial and military style connectors used on our BiT 450 ordinary location models. Maintenance of systems is greatly simplified with quick electrical disconnects and no expensive explosion proof boxes that are susceptible to scratches on sealing flame path surfaces during maintenance. Barksdale’s new intrinsically safe models also include advanced Thin-Film and HART technology providing all of the advantages of our other models including high accuracy and long term stability.

Barksdale Series 450

Barksdale Intelligent Transmitters (BiT), Series 450 is a high pressure transmitter with HART® communication protocol option. HART® enabled sensors can communicate over the legacy two-wire 4-20 mA analog current loops offering smart features like transmitter diagnostics, calibration, and field re-ranging up to 10 times less than calibrated full scale output (10:1 turndown ratio). Three models are available: Series H455, 4-20 mA output with HART® Comm. Protocol; Series 455, 4-20 mA output; Series 452, 1-5 VDC output. These models can be configured with 24-standard pressure ranges from vacuum to 30,000 psi and multiple process connections from 1/4” NPT to 7/16” SAE and HF4 Autoclave high-pressure connections. Barksdale's Series 423 and 426 Transducers and 425 Transmitters are general purpose, industrial grade transducers, ideal for use in general industrial applications when a robust transducer is required. Wetted parts are constructed of 17-4PH and 300 Series Stainless Steel, with NEMA 4 enclosures constructed of 304 Stainless Steel. These units feature a stable, diffused silicon sensor that achieves .25% accuracy, have pressure ranges from 0-10,000 psi and are available in 5V, 10V or 4-20 mA outputs. High pressure snubbers are standard on units at 2,000 psi and above. Optional surge voltage protection to 6kV is available. A variety of process fittings and electrical connections are available to meet your needs.

Barksdale's Series 600 is the ideal solution for applications that require a low cost, accurate, reliable transducer in a small package. Where long term stability is a requirement, the Series 600 transducer delivers. With a robust ceramic sensor that excels in rugged environments, the Series 600 offers high accuracy at 0.5% FSO and thermal stability within .06% over the entire operating range of -40 to 185° F. Wetted materials of 316 stainless steel, ceramic and Viton® make it ideal for use with aggressive media. Barksdale Series 423X, 425X, 426X

Barksdale's 420X Series Explosion Proof Transducers prevent an explosion from occurring when operated in a Division 1 environment. Barksdale's 420X Series transducers prevent personal injury and machinery damage by preventing the explosion the first place. Energy generated within the transducer is of such a low level that intermittently present flammable vapors will not be ignited. External zener barriers are not required in order to meet UL requirements for a non-incendive installation. The lower cost of not having to install zener barriers means that the positive aspects of intrinsically safe and explosion proof are combined in Barksdale non-incendive transducers. Three models are available: Series 423X (0-5V), Series 425X (4-20mA) and Series 426X (0-10V).

Barksdale's 440 Series Intrinsically Safe Transducers provide high accuracy pressure measurement when operating in Class I, Division I environments. Intrinsically safe transducers prevent personal injury and machinery damage by preventing the explosion in the first place. External zener barriers are required in order to meet UL requirements for an intrinsically safe installation. The higher cost of having to install a zener barrier is offset with the comfort of knowing that an explosion will not occur within normal operating conditions. Three models are available: Series 443 (0-5V), Series 445 (4-20mA) and Series 446 (0-10V).

A King downpipe is the simplest type of liquid level sensor, often referred to as a “bubbler." This is merely a length of open ended pipe that extends downward into the tank. LiquiSeal™ or Purge Control differential pressure air flow regulators are highly refined versions of the basic bubbler air control.

When purged with compressed air, liquid within the downpipe is displaced by air pressure equal to the hydrostatic force of liquid in the tank. If carefully regulated at a low rate of flow, air pressure will constantly maintain equilibrium against the force of the liquid. Air escapes out through the bottom of the pipe unless needed to increase pressure as liquid force (depth) increases.

788 D/P Purge Control is a differential pressure regulator and air flow control. It generates a constant flow of compressed air to purge a downpipe. Its integral differential pressure transmitter provides 4-20 mAdc output proportional to liquid level.


The primary sensor element is typically 3/4 in. diameter pipe purchased from a local source. Always select piping material for compatibility with the tank contents. Downpipe purge systems can be used to measure virtually any type of liquid product including resins, asphalt or corrosive materials.

Output is proportional to liquid depth and can be transmitted as an electronic 4-20 mA signal or pneumatically as a direct 1:1 pressure signal.



LiquiSeal D/P purge control is a fully integrated air purge regulator and level transmitter. Operation is based on the control regulating a continuous 1 cfh (cubic foot per hour) flow of compressed air into the tank downpipe. An internal differential pressure sensor element converts resulting pressure into a 4-20 mA dc two wire signal.

788 D/P Purge Control is a more basic differential pressure regulator and air flow control. It generates a constant flow of compressed air to purge a downpipe. Its integral differential pressure transmitter provides 4-20 mAdc output proportional to liquid level. 780 Purge Control is an all-pneumatic version that does not include the integral transmitter. It provides a 1:1 pressure signal to a compatible indicator or external transducer through 1/4 in. airline tubing. The purge control holds a fixed pressure differential across a precision orifice to ensure constant flow rate of 1 cfh (cubic foot per hour). This regulated low flow rate makes it possible to maintain a linear 1:1 response of the sensing system. In this way, back pressure sensed is equivalent to the hydrostatic head pressure due to actual liquid depth.

Pneumatic Output Signal
Purge Control or LiquiSeal Control provides air pressure signal to an external transmitter or compatible indicator (with integral transducer). Typically, 1/4” poly or soft copper tubing is used to convey the pressure signal up to 1000 feet from the tank.

Electronic 4-20 mA Output
D/P Purge Control or D/P LiquiSeal transmitter provides a 4-20 mA output over a two wire cable to an indicator or the analog I/O of a PLC. Using twisted pair shielded cabling permits transmission distances of several thousand feet to a remote receiver.

Hazardous Zone Service - The downpipe sensor and pneumatic components are fully compatible with explosion hazard environments. This makes pneumatic the sensible alternative for hazardous areas without the cost and complications of intrinsic safety barriers or explosion-proof products.*

Transmitter turndown ratio is 3:1 for the 0–15, 0–30, 0–50 psid nominal ranges.
